A collection of mummified animals that the scholars brought back from Egypt seemed to hold the key to the question of species transformation. ORLANDO, Fla. — As rumors swirl over whether Saks Fifth Avenue will acquire Neiman Marcus, Neiman's CEO told CNBC there's "no need" to sell the business, adding it's unlikely to change hands in the next five years. Some people close to the companies have told CNBC a merger between the two is inevitable, and is a matter of when, not if. But Neiman's CEO Geoffroy van Raemdonck said there is currently "no process to sell the company." Eventually, those owners will seek to offload the business, but van Raemdonck said it won't be any time soon. They have not yet received an offer that was large or attractive enough to move the needle, a source familiar with the matter previously told CNBC.

Inditex shares have risen around 64% over the past 12 months as the world's biggest clothing retailer successfully passed cost increases on to shoppers and reported record profit margins. But after several U.S. retailers including Macy's and Foot Locker warned of weak consumer spending, fears of an economic slowdown have come back into focus. CNN —Poland is planning to move around 10,000 troops to its eastern border with Belarus amid mounting concerns over Wagner forces in the region. Wagner troops have been stationed within Belarus – a close ally of Russia – in the wake of a short-lived rebellion carried out by the group. Paris/London CNN —Just weeks after hugely disruptive protests and strikes over pension reforms in France finally died down, businesses in the country are grappling with the fallout from a week of rioting. The riots, which were sparked by the fatal shooting of a teenager by a police officer last Tuesday, have already caused more than €1 billion ($1.1 billion) worth of damage, according to a French business association, MEDEF. Protesters have looted 200 stores and destroyed 300 bank branches and 250 smaller corner shops, a MEDEF spokesperson told CNN. Mr. Bolloré, an industrialist often described as France’s Rupert Murdoch, has been steadily building a conservative media empire, anchored by a Fox-style news network, CNews. Paris CNN —French authorities arrested about 150 people overnight as protests broke out for a second night over the fatal police shooting of a teenager, officials said Thursday. The incident triggered violent protests in several Paris suburbs on Tuesday night, during which 24 police officers were injured and 40 cars set alight, French authorities said. In anticipation of violence stretching into a second evening, 2,000 extra police officers were mobilized Wednesday afternoon, authorities said. Darmanin expressed support for police and firefighters, saying: “shame on those who did not call for calm.”The officer who allegedly shot the teenager was taken into custody Tuesday and will undergo questioning by prosecutors, Nanterre prosecutor’s office told CNN. The death of the 17-year-old was pronounced Tuesday morning “following at least one gunshot wound” and despite the intervention of emergency medics, the Nanterre prosecutor’s office said earlier.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo is forming a committee to study “cohabitation” – to what extent humans and rodents can live together – one of her deputies said Thursday during a city council meeting. New York CNN —Helen of Troy, which owns Vicks, OXO and Osprey among other consumer goods and beauty brands, is laying off 10% of its staff, in the face of sluggish demand and economic uncertainty. They are part of an effort to streamline the organization and reach $75 to $85 million in annualized savings in the coming years. Salesforce is planning to cut about 10% of staff and reduce its real estate footprint. Helen of Troy, which owns Vicks and other brands, is reducing its workforce by 10%. In the beauty segment, it owns Drybar and Hot Tools, which sells curling irons and other hair tools.

Just under half (46%) said they were adjusting supply chains, and around a third (32%) said they were onshoring their workforce.
